Young drivers — high crash risk
Young drivers (drivers aged 17 to 24) are one of Queensland's most at risk road user groups. In Queensland each year:
- about 100 fatalities occur as a result of crashes involving young drivers (including drivers, pedestrians and passengers)
- more than 2000 young drivers are involved in hospitalisation crashes
- about 75% of the time the young driver is at fault in crashes involving death or injury
- about 80% of young drivers involved in fatal crashes are males.
Reasons for crashes
Research has shown that the major factors contributing to young driver road crash fatalities are:
- inexperience
- overconfidence
- deliberate risk-taking behaviours.
What can be done?
The literature review helped to develop the two resources below:
Teacher resources
The department has developed resources that teachers can use to develop students' knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours as they become young drivers. The resources are organised into a number of units which are designed to be delivered in the classroom. The units comprise facilitation of group work, independent research and work tasks, and class discussions about road safety issues.
